چکیده

Observations on security prices, currency exchange rates, interest rates, and other nancial time series usually include not only an open and close, but also a high and low price for the period. The information on high and low prices of considerable value, particularly for estimating volatility, and essential in the pricing of look-back and barrier options. For pricing more general derivatives, this information is useful to the extent that changes in volatility is an important ingredient in the price. This available information is used to estimate parameters , conduct tests, provide simple simulations, and generate plots sensitive to the volatility parameter.

Scaling and Multiscaling in Financial Series: a Simple Model

We propose a simple stochastic volatility model which is analytically tractable, very easy to simulate and which captures some relevant stylized facts of financial assets, including scaling properties. In particular, the model displays a crossover in the log-return distribution from power-law tails (small time) to a Gaussian behavior (large time), slow decay in the volatility autocorrelation an...

Forecast Evaluation of Explanatory Models of Financial Variability∗ Forthcoming in Economics—The Open-Access, Open-Assessment E-Journal

A practice that has become widespread and widely endorsed is that of evaluating forecasts of financial variability obtained from discrete time models by comparing them with high-frequency ex post estimates (e.g. realised volatility) based on continuous time theory. In explanatory financial variability modelling this raises several methodological and practical issues, which suggests an alternati...

Volatility Clustering in Financial Markets: Empirical Facts and Agent–Based Models

Time series of financial asset returns often exhibit the volatility clustering property: large changes in prices tend to cluster together, resulting in persistence of the amplitudes of price changes. After recalling various methods for quantifying and modeling this phenomenon, we discuss several economic mechanisms which have been proposed to explain the origin of this volatility clustering in ...

Modelling and Investigating the Differences and Similarities in the Volatility of the Stocks Return in Tehran Stock Exchange Using the Hybrid Model PANEL-GARCH

Efficient financial markets with high degree of transparency do not substantiate the hypothesis that there are differences in the volatility of return. Generally, there are factors rejecting any perfect similarity in the volatility of return in the emerging stock markets, as previous studies in Iran have confirmed the complete difference. On the other hand, the hybrid model PANEL-GARCH has the ...

Scaling and Multiscaling in Financial Indexes: a Simple Model

We propose a simple stochastic model for time series which is analytically tractable, easy to simulate and which captures some relevant stylized facts of financial indexes, including scaling properties. We show that the model fits the Dow Jones Industrial Average time series in the period 1935-2009 with a remarkable accuracy. Despite its simplicity, the model has several interesting features. T...
